The Ultimate Temple Run: How to Conquer Angkor Wat in One Day

Updated: Aug 14

So, you’ve got just one day to explore the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. It sounds impossible, right? Wrong! With a solid game plan, you can turn your temple-hopping dreams into reality. Get ready to embark on the most epic "temple run" of your life!

Step 1: Rise and Shine

First things first—set that alarm clock for an ungodly hour. Trust me, you won’t regret it! The Angkor Wat sunrise is something out of a movie. Picture this: the sky gradually shifts from deep purples and pinks to brilliant oranges and golds, all reflecting in the moat surrounding the temple. It's the perfect way to start your day and an unbeatable Instagram moment.

Although we started out pretty late and didn't get that picture perfect sunrise shot. Hitting snooze one too many times, let's say our enthusiasm didn't survive the night after a long day of travel from Vietnam to Phonm Penh and to Siem Reap, the comfort of our beds was too irresistible.

Step 2: The Grand Tour of Angkor Wat

It’s time to dive into Angkor Wat itself. This sprawling complex is the largest religious monument in the world, and its intricate carvings and towering spires will leave you in awe. Take your time wandering through the galleries, where scenes from Hindu mythology come to life in stone. Don't forget to visit the upper level, where you’ll find some of the best views of the entire site.

Fun Fact: Angkor Wat was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu before becoming a Buddhist temple. You'll see influences from both religions as you explore.

Step 3: Temple Hop Like a Pro

Next up on your temple run is Angkor Thom, the ancient walled city. Head straight to Bayon Temple, famous for its 200+ smiling stone faces that seem to follow you wherever you go. It's both eerie and enchanting. Take a moment to snap a selfie with these iconic faces, and then move on to Baphuon and the Terrace of the Elephants for more ancient splendor.

Pro Tip: Keep a bottle of water handy—Cambodian heat is no joke, especially when you're on the move all day!

Step 4: Embrace Your Inner Tomb Raider at Ta Prohm

If you've ever dreamed of being Lara Croft, now’s your chance! Ta Prohm is the jungle temple made famous by the Tomb Raider movie, and it’s as wild as it gets. Massive tree roots snake their way through the temple ruins, creating a dramatic, otherworldly atmosphere. This temple is a bit quieter than Angkor Wat, giving you a chance to soak in the mystical vibes.

Fun Fact: The giant trees at Ta Prohm are called spung trees, and they’ve been growing here for centuries, slowly overtaking the stone structures.

Step 5: The Big Finish—Preah Khan

Your final temple of the day is Preah Khan, one of Angkor’s most extensive complexes. This temple is often less crowded, which makes it the perfect spot to end your whirlwind tour. Wander through its maze-like corridors, and imagine what life might have been like here during the height of the Khmer Empire. Preah Khan has a magical, slightly abandoned feel to it, making it the ideal place to reflect on your day’s adventure.

Pro Tip: If you have a bit of extra time, swing by Neak Pean, a small temple on an island in the middle of a reservoir. It’s a peaceful spot and a nice change of pace from the larger temples.

Step 6: Sunset—A Perfect Ending

If you still have some energy left (and let’s be real, you’ve come this far!), cap off your day with a sunset at Phnom Bakheng. It’s a bit of a hike to the top, but the panoramic views over Angkor Wat and the surrounding jungle are a fantastic way.

Pro Tip: Rent a bike so that you can temple Hop Like a Pro and cover the famously temples in a day.
